AFDE Employees Made a Difference this Holiday Season

This holiday season, AFDE employees raised over $6,850 for three local charities in Fort St. John.

It all started with a couple of AFDE-ers who wanted to make a difference in the lives of families that were less fortunate. Their goodwill then snowballed to a company-wide effort.

Pooling together promotional items donated by our suppliers Hilti and SJA Promo, AFDE staff organized a raffle with proceeds divided between the Salvation Army Food Bank, Women’s Resource Society, and the North Peace SPCA. Everyone on site was incredibly supportive, with many people having personal connections to the organizations. People told stories of how they were once helped by the Food Bank, or how rescue animals touched their lives. The raffle raised $5550 as well as four large boxes of non-perishables which were divided between the Salvation Army Food Bank and Women’s Resource Society.

Meanwhile, our craft employees in the Powerhouse, started a parallel initiative to support the Salvation Army’s Christmas Hamper Program. The program provides less fortunate families with everything they need to have a wonderful Christmas dinner, including toys for families with kids. They started a collection box in the Powerhouse just a couple of weeks ago, but donations soon started pouring in from all the other groups on site. So many folks in the field wanted to contribute to sponsor as many families as possible. They have raised $1305, which will help many families have a Christmas with all the trimmings!

On Tuesday December 17, AFDE delivered the donations to the organizations. We got a tour of the facilities and heard more about the many services each organization provides. It was a humbling and emotional experience to learn how many people (and furry friends) rely on each organization daily.

We are part of the Fort St. John community. We live here, we use the different community services, and we want to give back. We are incredibly fortunate to have a place to sleep and plenty of food to fill our bellies. It’s our responsibility as community members to help out those who are less fortunate.

AFDE is humbled by the big outpouring of donations by our staff, craft, and subcontractors. There is something about this time of year that brings out the best in people. Let’s continue to support each other and help everyone in our community thrive. That’s our wish for 2020.
